    Driver and Safety Education (DTSE)

Driver & Traffic Safety Education in New York State schools is a course implemented via a joint partnership between the New York State Education Department (NYSED), and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The Driver Education course is intended to educate students (age 16 or older) on appropriate driving skills and habits as well as playing a responsible role in the highway transportation/safety system. Course highlights include 24 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind the wheel training and 18 hours of car observation. Students who satisfactorily complete the course are eligible to receive the MV-285: Student Certificate of Completion. 

The MV-285 Student Certificate of Completion allows:

  • A Junior Permit holder to schedule a road test
  • Young drivers a possible reduction in automobile insurance cost (participation is dependent upon insurance provider participation.
  • A 17 year old to receive a senior license (MV-285 form must be submitted to local DMV to attain this benefit.)

Online Pre-licensing NYS 5 Hour Course

In order to obtain a New York State Operator’s License, you must complete this mandatory five-hour course.

Topics Include:
Information on drug and alcohol abuse, defensive driving techniques, and appropriate driving behavior.
Attendance for five hours is required in order to obtain the Certificate of Completion necessary for your road test.

YOU MUST POSSESS A VALID LEARNING PERMIT AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION.

  Driver License Online Permit Test at                                  IHS

To qualify:

  • You must be a current IHS student
  • At least 15 years old (You may take the test at 15 but can not get your permit until you are 16.)

Step 1:  Pick up the DMV manual from the local DMV office or click on link below and STUDY!

Step 2: Stop in the IHS DMRC between the times of 10:25 am - 12:30 pm to register.

Testing Time: 3:15 - 4:30 p.m.
Testing Location: IHS, Room 1074

*LIMIT 7 STUDENTS PER PERMIT TESTING DATE*

Step 3: The day of the test you simply come to Room 1074 and sign on to a computer and take the test.  Upon successful completion of the test, a barcoded    receipt will be printed out for you. This receipt DOES NOT allow you to drive, it is simply proof that you passed the test. You will also receive a packet that includes all the forms and information you will need to complete the permit process.

Step 4 (final step): Is a trip to the DMV with your parent or guardian with the barcoded receipt, completed forms, proper identification, and payment.
