Safety Update for our Students

Safety Update for our Students

WICSD endorses Irondequoit Town Supervisor Seeley’s request to the county seeking support for the creation of a school zone on Cooper Rd. In addition, we continue to work to educate students and community members about safe driving habits. You may have noticed the “Drive Text Free” signs on our campuses and our vehicles and older students may have shared with you their experiences using our distracted driving simulator.

On Thursday, IHS will host a safe driving event sponsored by Monroe County. This event was planned back in February, and in light of the tragic accident on Cooper Rd. we felt it was important to continue with our plan. Students will have the opportunity to use one of our distracted driving simulators and participate in activities provided by the county to increase their awareness of behaviors while driving and walking. The Monroe County Office of Traffic Safety is working with local school districts to reach teenage drivers through these presentations.

We are also reviewing signage on campuses regarding speed limits and crosswalks looking for improvements to maintain a focus on pedestrian safety. We invite parents to remind children about the safest ways to travel to school and remind all drivers to use caution especially in areas that are traveled heavily by those who are walking.
