Art Curriculum

Works of art are some of the highest achievements of civilization.  In school, students learn the language of the arts and how to interpret visual images, sounds, movement and story.  Because the arts are both universal and culturally specific, they are a powerful means of increasing international and intercultural awareness.  Through the arts, students gain a greater understanding of their own cultural heritage, as well as a sense of the larger world community. In the visual arts the purpose of education is to enable the learner to become visually literate and expressive at a level consistent with their intellectual, emotional, and physical development

Every West Irondequoit student can benefit from a sequential K-12 arts education. Students deserve to learn about our common artistic heritage, and each has the capacity to add personal expressions to the world. The arts provide students with experiences in creating, performing, and responding to these personal expressions. Centered in practice and history of the arts disciplines, the West Irondequoit Central School District philosophy takes into account students’ evolving needs and interests, builds on their prior experiences, provides a valuable means of creative expression and enjoyment, and enables insightful interpretations to be made with other disciplines.
