Visual Art Department Mission Statement

Visual literacy and arts achievement demand engagement in the fundamental creative practices of discovery, imagination, investigation, construction, and reflection in multiple contexts. Art students are empowered with the ability to analyze and interpret the artistic communications of others throughout history as well as in an increasingly visual and digital world. Close analysis through constructing and deconstructing meaning provides a cross-textual base that allows students to become visually fluent through the exploration of genre, media, moods, materials and themes. Rigorous study in the visual arts prepares students to be creators, consumers and appreciators of the arts who are equipped to face real world challenges with tenacity and creativity.

Art Department Guiding Principles:

The Arts as Exploration and Discovery

The arts nurture courage, joy, insight, pride and creative risk-taking as students use varied materials and apply conceptual understandings to develop new solutions. Art encourages students to expand their creative capacity and push boundaries.   At its core, art engages emotions that inspire.

The Arts as Culture, History and Global Engagement

Artistically literate citizens know and understand artwork form varied historical periods, cultures, and aspects of humanity. Students will cultivate habits of searching for and identifying patterns through interdisciplinary approaches. They actively appreciate diverse forms and genres of artwork of enduring quality and significance, while seeking to understand universal themes and relationships among the arts.

The Arts as Creativity and Innovation

The artistic process changes an individual. It produces a mindset that encourages life-long aptitudes which will prepare the learner for real world challenges. Developing and manifesting concepts requires original thinking, tenacity, and discipline as students research, refine, and problem solve to create meaningful work that may be formally presented or shared. The arts employ the concept of “adaptive cognition,” the ability to respond effectively to the unanticipated.

The Arts as Visual Communication

Students create and study artworks to increase Visual Literacy. They develop and synthesize original, informed responses by describing and analyzing formal compositional aesthetics; the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students use visual evidence and critique to propose meaning, justify claims, interpret, and evaluate merit of works of art. In today’s multimedia society, the arts are the media, and therefore provide powerful and essential means of communication.

The Arts as Career and Community Connections

Creators, consumers and appreciators of the arts create links that strengthen our community and act as a vehicle for social expression. The Arts introduce students to both career connections and a way of life. Authentic arts experiences facilitate and foster the understanding of real world expectations including independence, teamwork, and collaboration.
